Proper preparation for a long flight can make a difference in how you feel once you arrive at your destination. The key to a successful, restful flight is to start hydrating a few days before you travel. I prepare for really long flights like preparing for a marathon. The hydration doesn’t only happen on the plane or during the run, it happens days before too. If you start off hydrated and continue to hydrate while on the flight your skin, body and brain will thank you when you land and for days to follow. Hydration is extremely important to keep the body balanced and functioning at a high level. Dehydration leads to headaches, constipation and inability to get on a new time zone. Choose water as your beverage of choice during the duration of the flight. DO NOT drink alcohol or caffeine (this includes tea) as they both promote dehydration. Although having a glass of wine seems like the smart choice to induce sleep, it is actually the worst choice. Try taking Melatonin to help induce sleep.

Most planes have 10-20 % humidity levels, which can lead to dry throat, dry + scratchy eyes and dry skin. Low humidity also ups your risk of catching a respiratory virus (a cold), and since about 50% of the air on flights is recycled, germs are rampant. So take precautions! You can wear a mask, nostril covers, or simply cover your face while sleeping. Another smart way to protect yourself from germs, is to wipe down your seat area. Pack disinfectant wipes and use them on the seatbelt, tray table, armrests and remote controls. Also try not to touch bathroom handles, faucets etc. You can also put down your own blanket or wrap, so you have a clean seat.

Exercise is another key factor in feeling good on a long journey. Try to exercise the night before or morning of your trip. Exercise relaxes the mind and body, increases circulation and produces sweat. Sweating realizes endorphins, which make us, feel good.

When it comes to skincare on a long flight, hydration is the name of the game. If you wear makeup you’re going to want to remove it before going to sleep. I always travel with facial wipes for this purpose. My favorite are Ko Gen Do cleansing spa water cloths because they are organic and contain essential herbs and they don’t dry the skin out. After removing all makeup, apply a hydration serum or oil to clean skin. My go to oil is Fleuressence Native Botanical Oil because it’s super hydrating but not greasy. Next apply eye cream and hand cream. Carrying a facial mist is a good way to stay hydrated and feel refreshed while traveling. My favorite is Glossier’s Facial Mist made of roses and aloe to soothe.

Summer weddings are always the most glorious and romantic. Warm breezes, dancing by candle light and cold fresh cocktails infused with mint are my idea of a perfect summer wedding. But, what to wear? This all depends on where the wedding is being held. Summer weddings are usually either destination or outside or both.  I’m currently curating my outfit for a wedding this weekend in Chicago. The wedding is at the bride and groom’s home in the suburbs and will beheld indoor and outdoor. There are a few elements to take into consideration when choosing an outfit.  How fancy are the couple and what the venue is. Meaning you don’t want to show up in a strapless Nicole Miller dress if the bride is in a white cotton sundress. And you don’t want to be in high Louboutins if the wedding is in the grass( I am speaking from experience…). You need to also think about makeup and hair(think humidity). Below are a few ideas and tips on how to look oh so gorgeous!

When choosing what to wear always photo-73think about the climate. If the wedding is on the beach it is going to be warm, so wear light materials. If the wedding is inside a church or temple or hall, you want to incorporate a wrap because the AC will be cranking. Currently I am obsessed with the brand Reformation and wearing one of their dresses this weekend.  All of their dresses are sustainable and made from discarded material from the top fashion houses. The dresses are lightweight, flowy and extremely sexy. Some dresses will have the backs cut out or the sides cut out, which leaves enough to the imagination to be ethereal and seductive all at the same time. If you want to wear something short and sweet the color blue is always a happy choice. Royal blue is giving black a run for it’s money this season and looks good on everyone. TopShop made the sweetest short blue dress with a plunging neckline that I wore for my birthday in the winter with black tights and again recently with bare legs and wedges to an event.

After you’ve decided on your dress it’s time to think about shoes.  As I mentioned before I had a bad situation one summer at a wedding ceremony where the ground was not covered with a floor. I was in 6 inch heels and suffice it to say did a lot of walking around on the balls of my feet until the reception started inside. So, think ahead. Ask the bride if necessary. The wedding I’m going to this weekend is indoor/outdoor and I am wearing Alice and Olivia Wedges as I was informed there will be mulch. Why tempt fate again?!? If the wedding is during the day or very casual a jeweled flat sandal is completely appropriate and looks very chic with the right dress. Of course you can never go wrong with a strappy metallic heel just know what you’re walking into….

Odds are it will be warm if the wedding is outside, so natural is always the best way to go when it comes to hair. Fighting humidity is always going to be an uphill battle and you will never win. You can blow dry your hair and leave a few sections damn and spray on a beachy mist like Bumble and Bumble for a messy, wavy look. Another terrific trick for outside hair is to wear a fun or jeweled headband. Pinning some hair up with a flower and bobby pins is also a easy way to keep simple, sexy and un-styled. Go light with the makeup too. Nothing worse than a cakey, oily face of makeup. Remember that if you’re going to be outside the humidity will give your face a dewy hydrated look anyway-no need to pile on extra. Be wary of wearing a lot of illuminated makeup, this will only make you look oily. A gorgeous look for summer is a light eye, highlighted cheek and pink or red lip. One big pop of color! For the most amazing illuminated cheek run, don’t walk to buy Kevyn Aucoin’s Candlelight Illuminating powder.  This can be used all over the face and eyes and has been named the ‘Mercedes Benz of highlighters”! And because this is a powder you won’t look slick and shiny like with a cream based highlighter. My one must have for any event or occasion is Scott Barnes Body Bling. Originally created for Jennifer Lopez, this makes your body look flawless and glowing.  Use this on your chest, arms and legs. You will look thinner, more tan and evened out. This even covers spider veins!!

Now you’re summer wedding ready and all you have to do is catch the bouquet!

Straight off the runway, there is a new trend alert : “we are heading back to 80’s!” No, not MORE neon….PHEW! Think music videos and beautiful women all dressed alike.  That’s right Robert Palmer’s ‘addicted to love‘ video put the  look on the map and now its back!  Slicked  back hair and dark lips were all the rage at the Bottega Veneta and Yves Saint Laurent shows according to Allure magazine’s Beauty Reporter!

You don’t need a makeup artist or hair stylist to achieve this look.  You do need a pigment heavy lipstick and metallic eyeshadow. Try MAKE UP FOREVER’S Rouge Artist Intense in Pearly Dark Violet and Maize Gold-2 Metal Eye Shadow. A tip to getting full hydrated looking lips is to take a warm wet towel and rub your lips to make sure all the dry skin is off. This will also irritate your lips and make them appear fuller. Lining lips will help to prevent  your lip stick color bleeding. After lining apply lipstick all over and use a brush for a more professional look. The next step is my favorite, add a tiny bit of metallic eyeshadow to the middle of your bottom lip. This makes your lips pop and glow while adding dimension. Try a warmer shade like gold or copper for a sexy earthy look and a silver or white for an icy ethereal look. Last but never least apply Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss to achieve a crazy sheen! Pucker up, because no one will be able to resist your kissable pout!

For the slicked back look my first suggestion is that you need to commit to this. If you decide to wear it for the night you must own it! This hair style is not for the shy, it’s for the daring, fashion forward crew. Wet your hair, add a serum with a lot of hold and comb back into a bun.  If you want to do a side part, which is a little more reminiscent of the 1930’s, that works too. Severe yes, but very sexy if done correctly.

Robert Palmer may be gone but his idea of beauty lives on at least for this season.
