Balancing the skin is a delicate dance between the right amount of exfoliation, treatment, hydration and nourishment. Dr. G created The Skin Balancing Mask  for this exact reason. Inspired by one of Dr. Goldfaden’s professional balancing treatments, which includes a combination of microdermabrasion, vitamin/enzyme infusion and oxygen. This multidimensional treatment works to reduce the appearance of facial lines and uneven skin tone, all while providing skin with a plumping effect that results in a firmer, smoother glowing complexion.

Formulated to utilize powerful anti-aging peptides and the efficient but gentle effects of malic acid, the Skin Balancing Mask provides anti-aging and nourishing benefits. This lightweight gel mask utilizes the next generation of hydrators, as it balances, soothes and calms skin while streamlining the process of intense exfoliation an in-office procedure would require. Other key ingredients include ginseng, honey, flower extracts, and vitamin E to improve skin elasticity and increase collagen production. Ginseng, Honey, Jojoba Oil, floral peptides and Vitamin E infuse moisture, vitality and nourishment back into the skin.

Derived from apples, this gentle alpha hydroxy helps to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, tighten pores, minimize the appearance of skin pigmentation, moisturizes and exfoliates skin ridding it of dead skin cells.

The result: improved skin texture and appearance, leaving it softer and smoother.

Why you should be wearing a mask with Ginseng

Ginseng has been promoted as an anti-ageing treatment since probably forever. It contains a large amount of phytonutrients, which can stimulate and activate the skin’s metabolism. It rids skin of the free radicals, which get accumulated when your skin is regularly exposed to sunlight and environmental pollution. Ginseng also contains certain ingredients that can increase the production of collagen in the middle layer of the skin known as dermis, making the skin firmer. Collagen is responsible for making the skin more elastic and toned, thereby diminishing wrinkles or fine lines on the face and other body parts.

Ginseng roots and leaves are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which are good for overall skin health. The roots and leaves metabolize skin cells and facilitate the elimination of dead skin cells to produce healthy new skin. Ginseng tea is particularly great for refining and rehydrating your skin, by regenerating skin cells by increasing oxygenation. It also improves blood circulation and is a great blood detoxifier. All these factors contribute to a healthier and brighter complexion. Topical use of ginseng leaves can keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Why you need the Flower Power

The flower extracts really set this mask apart. The beautiful and dainty elderflower promotes blood flow and is loaded with vitamins A, B, C and E. Bright orange Calendula (pot marigold) is responsible for moisturizing, soothing skin, pain relief and anti-inflammatory benefits. Beautiful red and fuchsia Geranium extract is calming, anti-bacterial and serves as an astringent.

The New Year is traditionally a time for renewing, resetting, clearing, cleansing, and detoxing. However, January is not the only time for these rituals, as it is something that should be kept up all year long!

Just as we are getting out of the party excess mode and focusing heavily on cleansing our internal system through diet (remember all of the endless sweets and alcohol consumption over the last few weeks?!), it’s equally as important to focus on our external (topical) system as well. Since our skin is the largest organ of our body it’s equally important to cleanse and nourish our external system, through proper skincare so that we can provide our entire body with a detox cleanse.

We enlisted Dr. G to breakdown the highlight of different types of detox ingredients that we want in our masks that are essential to a detoxifying regimen and maintain usage throughout the year.

Fact: The average person’s face contains roughly 20,000 pores, each of which act as a ‘pocket’ for dead skin, oil, dirt, and makeup. Throughout the course of a day, these impurities will gradually make their way into the pores, promoting the formation of acne blemishes, irritation and inflammation. Hence, why it’s so important to practice proper skin detoxification, particularly in the form of a potent skin clarifying mask which adds an extra punch of detoxification to any regimen.

Acids: Removing dead skin cells and along with them, pollution and dirt from the skin. Glycolic, lactic, salicylic acids and fruit enzymes are common in all types of “chemical” exfoliants.  Enzymes are also reported to diminish scars, age spots, fine lines, and discoloration, and may also penetrate the skin to cleanse pores and improve skin tone and texture.

Clay: The uber-potent mineral has a super absorbanent material that yanks out dirt and it’s a naturally occurring mineral that works to soothe redness. They work the same way as charcoal, by drawing dirt out of skin. Oily skin and acne-prone people alike swear by clay, because it helps to expel toxins and and reduce redness.  Rule number one of clay masks: Never let them dry completely. Using clay-like masks can be pretty heavy-duty (using too frequently and/or leaving on for too long), so limit use to twice a week max so that you can benefit from the proper treatment.

Charcoal: Acts like a magnet, pulling grime and junk off the skin. Tip: Charcoal needs a bit of time to activate and penetrate the skin, so the most effective charcoal-based products on the market, come in a mask form (i.e. not a cleanser or sponge) so that it will allow for a chance to penetrate the skin and provide the ultimate treatment benefits.

The thought of an overnight mask or treatment can be daunting for skincare newbies. How will you look in the morning? Will you actually see a visible difference?  And the main question, “I’m supposed to put what on my face?!?” Well fret no more, there are numerous overnight facial treatments, masks and DIY concoctions to choose from.

Overnight treatments are popular and effective because skin rests during sleep and the body performs its biological repair during these wee hours. Being inside your bed, warm and cozy away from environmental stressor such as the sun, wind, high temps or low temps, is also very beneficial. Choosing the correct treatment is important too. The first step is figure out what problem you want to target. Most people have similar concerns, brightening, hydration and anti-aging. Brightening and lightening are good issues to target at night because your skin is not in sunlight, which can stimulate melanin and also causes issues for retinoid users.

When deciding on an overnight cream or treatment look for ingredients like avocado, yogurt, retinol or vitamin c. Avocado(in a DIY mask) or avocado oil are some of the most effective and hydrating natural ingredients around. Retinol, found in WAKE UP CALL is also a favorite ingredient in overnight treatments. Yogurt as an ingredient in a cream or just applied directly on the face is beneficial for lightening and brightening due to it’s high levels of lactic acid. Yogurt is also antibacterial and anti-fungal(both fight acne). Because of the high levels of zinc in yogurt, it offers a cooing effect and is good for sunburns, rashes and some irritation. Then of course there are the anti-aging must haves-Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10 and Glucosamine. When combined these anti-aging powerhouses improve skin’s texture, plump sagging loose skin and help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Who doesn’t want to wake up looking 10 years younger?

When venturing into DIY, the more natural the better. You always want to do a spot test on your skin when making your treatments and masks just in case there is something that doesn’t agree with your skin. Our favorite DIY masks are the avocado/honey, all over coconut and yogurt and lemon. All over coconut is really an overnight treatment that consists on put raw coconut oil all over your face and sleeping in it. Since coconut oil is anti-microbial, ant-bacterial and anti-viral it will leave your skin clear, supple and hydrated not to mention smelling like a cookie! A yogurt and lemon mask is made to be worn for 10 mins and then removed. Just mix some plain unsweetened greek yogurt with just a tiny squeeze of lemon and mix. The yogurt will brighten and the lemon will help to lighten any existing dark spots or uneven skin tone areas.

The most important thing about overnight treatments and masks is to use them. Ensuring your skin gets enough hydration at night is imperative to waking up with a refreshed glow in the morning.
