Fall has arrived with winter quick on its heels. During the colder months skin can start to look pale, lackluster and dull. This does not mean it is time to run off the Bahamas or to your local tanning bed to try an attain that “healthy” glow.  Sun damage can last a lifetime so why not try the natural approach?

Getting glowing skin is easy thru exfoliation. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, improves the appearance of fine lines, reduces pore size, and leaves healthy, radiant skin. Cult favorite and Kate Hudson’s, DOCTOR’S SCRUB, is the answer to glowing skin. Dr. Goldfaden’s coveted exfoliator contains powerful ruby crystals that provide immediate cell renewal by polishing away dead surface cells, leaving skin brighter, clearer and younger-looking. Formulated with line-filling Hyaluronic Acid to deliver long-lasting hydration while nourishing Seaweed and Organic Red Tea Extract provide antioxidant protection. BOOYA! And we didn’t stop there…

During the rebrand of GOLDFADEN MD, we were adamant about creating a product that would brighten uneven skin tone and give an overall luminous glow. Thus, VITAL BOOST was born. VITAL BOOST contains skin boosting and rejuvenating Vitamin D  to maximizes the skin’s immunity, provide powerful antioxidant protection, improve elasticity and promote a more youthful complexion. Brightening skin agent, Indian Gooseberry, leaves skin looking dewy, radiant and flawless. I love this moisturizer because it goes on silky smooth and dries matte, leaving the slightest hint of a highlight.  Your skin will look fresh and radiant.

To give your glowing, hydrated complexion that extra kick, try a bronzer or highlighter (NOT the tanning bed). My top four bronzer picks for the season are Burberry Warm Glow in Nude Glow No.3 , which gives the illusion that you’ve just spent the afternoon lounging on the beeches of Greece. Armani Sheer Bronzer provides a sheer, natural color for those less daring. BECCA’s Shimmering Skin Perfector, adds an iridescence(I cannot get enough of this product). And as always Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick in Bronze makes you look like an ethereal sun kissed goddess!

Taking care of your skin with the right products and a rigorous regimen is just half the battle to obtaining a gorgeous complexion. Don’t be confused here: I am not implying to slack off on your skincare regimen; it’s as important to take care of your skin topically as it is internally. Here are my top three skin sins to throw away and get you on track for that healthy glow we all crave.

#1 Skipping Sunscreen
Hey sun goddesses, listen up! The best, if not one of the most important steps, to keep your skin from getting wrinkles, dull, saggy, and dehydrated. To highlight the obvious that we all have been told, studies have proven that overexposure to harmful UVA/UVB rays leads to skin cancer. Recommended use when in direct sun is to reapply a SPF 30 sun screen spray every 30 minutes. Daily protection is recommended even when not in direct sunlight too – either in your moisturizer and/or foundation.
#2 Smoking
You’ve heard it over and over again. Do you want deep lines, uneven/blotchy skin tone? Smoking attacks every cell in your body. In fact, every decade of smoking results in a perceived extra 2.5 years of age, according to research published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Don’t smoke. Period.
#3 Junk Food
You are what you eat. Actually, there is truth to this old saying. Eating junk food causes your insulin levels to sky rocket which leads to an increase of oil production (breaking out!). When you replace junk food with good fats like avocado, nuts, and peanut butter, you are less likely to breakout. These healthy fats also provide healthy vitamins and nutrients to your body, hair and nails. Try it. Check out Total Beauties top 9 picks for the best and worst foods for your skin!

Alexis Bittar

I’ve been obsessed with the jewelry designer and visionary Alexis Bittar ever since my Mom purchased a pair of his earrings from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago http://www.mcachicago.org over ten years ago. His use of lucite catapulted him into jewelry design stardom and his impeccable taste and desire to stay ahead of the curve have earned him a place in high fashion and street wear alike.

In the past few year Alexis Bittar has chosen accomplished, eccentric, beautiful and aging women(yes aging!) to represent and be the ‘faces’ of his jewelry line. These amazing ads have been splashed across the pages of ELLE and Vogue alike.  The most recent ad campaign features two of my favorite comedians, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, the women from Absolutely Fabulous! Thanks to Alex New York Magazine The Cut’s Alex Rees for breaking the story http://nymag.com/thecut/2012/01/ab-fabs-edina-patsy-front-bittars-new-ads.html. As I was flipping the pages of the October Bazaar, I came across this two page spread and just about screamed out loud!
