1. What’s your name & occupation?

My name is Anna Jepson, and I am a graphic designer, stylist, and art director. I also run the site LadyandLike.com, where you can find all of my work. Generally, if I am creating, I am happy.

2. Describe your beauty routine.

I tend to be pretty low maintenance when it comes to beauty and skincare. I use a simple, non-abrasive cleanser with a lightweight moisturizer. I always use concealer under my eyes, and then throw on some bronzer, a pinch of blush, a quick swoop across my lids for a very subtle cat-eye, and then mascara. I have started adding masks and exfoliants in a few times a week, which keeps my skin bright.

3. What are three things that you absolutely cannot live without.

Sad to say it, but my iPhone. I’m so plugged in on social media and email that it is essential to keep around all the time. I’m also always scouting the next best photo ;). Then it would be my collection of Steinbeck books. I have editions spanning the last 65 years, almost all of his works, and even a first edition I found at a used bookstore in New Jersey. It may be one of the nearest things to my heart. The last one is a good cup of coffee. Put all of those together and you’ve got my ideal Saturday. 😉

4. What is your favorite part about being a woman?

I really love this question and I’m glad you asked. As taboo as it might be, I love the “traditional” roles of being a woman. Today, gender roles and characteristics are becoming less defined, but I will always embrace the role a woman can play in care taking and hospitality. To be able to be freely warm and engaging to people, and open your home as a way to deepen community is such a great gift that we have. My great grandmother and I spent a lot of time in the kitchen together when I was little, and I think it has shaped a lot of who I am today.

5. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received as a woman?

“You are a treasure.” It has stayed with me since I was 16, and I think it has given me the strength to carry myself with dignity and respect. Women put up with a lot because society says it is okay, but it is not, and those four words remind me to hold myself to that truth, and not what society says.

6. Define beauty.

To me, beauty in a woman, is speaking graciously, carrying yourself modestly, and being considerate of those around you.

7. Tell us why you love Doctors Scrub Advanced as much as we do 🙂

I have more sensitive skin, so I only use a little at at time, but my skin is always so much brighter and taut afterwards. I like that it isn’t a scrub made of big beads or sugar, etc. It feels more sophisticated, and better for the environment! It’s unlike any other scrub I have ever used. Pure Start is also a favorite of mine. It lays on so smoothly and feels so clean.

Lauren/Lisa: What is SPF and what does it mean?

Dr. Goldfaden: The protection is all factored on the time spent in the sun. SPF, “Sun Protection Factor” primarily measures UVB protection. Sun Screen products above SPF 50 do not offer an increase in sun protection (this is the current FDA regulations). When one wears an SPF 30 for example, you could stay out in direct sunlight for 30 times longer before UVA/UVB damage occurs than a person with no sunscreen. This is how SPF factor’s are designated. The key to proper sun protection is the reapplication throughout the day. There is NO one miracle sun screen that covers and protects you completely throughout the day.

Lauren/Lisa: What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

Dr. Goldfaden: UVA makes up

about 90% of the UV radiation that reaches the earth on a daily basis – visible light that we see. UVB makes up the remaining 10% and is strongest during the peek hours of the day (11-3pm) when the sun is at its strongest. Although both cause skin damage and have been shown to lead to cancer, UVB rays penetrate deep into the dermis layers and causes the actual sun burn, redness and damage to the deep layers within the skin.

Lauren/Lisa: What is the difference between Chemical and Physical Sunscreen? Is one more preferable than the other?

Dr. Goldfaden: It’s important to understand the difference between Physical and Chemical SPF levels: Physical sunscreens protect your skin from the sun by deflecting or blocking the sun’s rays. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing the sun’s rays. Some chemical filters can scatter sun rays, but still mostly just absorb them. Physcial sunscreens have been approved from the FDA and show no issues at all. Chemical sunscreens are also safe depending on the type of ingredient – some chemical filters generate free radicals which can cause skin damage, irritation, and aging. For optimal protection, a sunscreen that offers both physical and chemical protection (and the chemical ingredient has been approved) are the safest.

Lauren/Lisa: How often should you reapply SPF throughout the day?

Dr. Goldfaden: Reapplication every hour when in direct sunlight and up to three times daily (AM/Mid—day/Afternoon) when going in and out of indoor/outdoor areas. As a general rule of thumb: if you are going to be outside for 20 minutes or more, SPF is recommended and I always recommend an SPF of at least a 30 in any case.

Lauren/Lisa: There are so many different SPF levels on the market. What are the rules? What is the highest level that we should be applying on our skin?

Dr. Goldfaden: The FDA has put in strict enforcements and regulatory measures to ensure that all SPF products follow a mandate the use of certain sun blocking agents, that have been FDA approved, are being used in products that claim SPF factors. Furthermore, the FDA outlines the template that companies must use in disclaiming the products safety and SPF legalizations on the secondary packaging. This ensures that all companies are following the same guidelines, restrictions and safety for our marketplace and consumers. The most notable and recent change is the use of SPF levels greater that 50. You won’t see sunscreens on the market in a year from now claiming SPF levels of 100. There is no substantiation that shows further sun blocking treatment benefits from a 50 to 100.

Breast cancer awareness month is the perfect time to take a closer look at what you’re putting on your body. We all know how important a healthy diet, exercise and screening is for cancer prevention. But what about your hair care and skin care, they can be causing you more harm than good. Absorption rate on the face and scalp is 5-10 times higher than the rest of the body. In today’s world there are so many healthy clean alternatives to traditional hair and beauty products. It may seem like a daunting task to change all your products at once but it doesn’t have to be. Start one at a time and ease into a healthier beauty regimen. Below are some ingredients to be aware of and stay away from.

PEGs and glycols: Including polyethylene glycol (PEG), butylene glycol, propylene glycol, polyoxyethylene, or anything ending with “eth” or “oxynol”

Lauryl and laureth sulfates: Includes sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate

Petrochemicals: Including mineral oil, petrolatum, light liquid paraffin, petroleum distillate, mineral jelly and petroleum jelly

Synthetic chemicals and dyes: A cocktail of potentially hundreds of chemicals

Triethanolamine: Often listed as TEA

Triclosan: A popular antimicrobial agent used in sanitizers and hand soaps

Phthalates: A plasticizer used in lipsticks, nail polishes, fragrances and hair sprays.

1,4 dioxane: A contaminant formed as a byproduct during manufacturing of detergents, foaming agents, emulsifiers and solvents. The FDA does not require it be listed as an ingredient, but it can be found in ingredients listed as PEGs and glycols.

Silicones: Methicone, Phenyl trimethicone, Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Dimethiconol, Dimenthiconol copolyol

Now that you know what not to use, what are the alternatives? We have so many favorites to share!

Skincare can be tricky in the hydration department. We want our skin to be hydrated and feel hyrdated. This is usually achieved with the ingredient dimethicone. While dimethicone has been labeled safe by the FDA and remains on the ‘low risk’ list with the Skin Deep Database, there is still reason for concern.  Dimethicone is a silicone  that gives haircare and skincare products that luxurious slip. The issue is that silicone coats whatever it is applied to. This can cause allergic reactions and dry skin. Because your skin is coated it cannot properly breathe and accept natural oils and humidity. Think of dimethicone products as a barrier over the skin, none of the good ingredients are able to be absorbed. So what to do? Look for skincare products that are free of silicones. Good ingredients to look for that will deliver hydrating results are Vitamin E, avocado oil, coconut oil, or naturally derived hyaluronic acid. Our Wake Up Call is the perfect example!
Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 11.06.03 AMFor haircare our goto is Rahua which is organic, free of parabens, silicones and sulfates! A rare Amazonian nut produces an oil that give Rahua its magic. “The key to Rahua’s outstanding performance is its molecular structure. Unlike other botanical oils that simply coat strands, the extraordinarily small Rahua oil molecule deeply penetrates the hair’s cortex – bonding and repairing it – while simultaneously smoothing the hair’s cuticle.” Not to mention it smells delicious!

When trying to live a healthy, clean, cancer-free life every little bit helps. Join us in spreading the word to other women about getting screened, eating organic, exercising, not smoking and getting educated on what goes on your body can be as important as what goes in it!
